This is One of the World’s Most Innovative Gun Manufacturers

0

Since the first muskets were introduced in Europe during the Early Renaissance period, guns have gone through a steady rate of improvements and variations to increase their overall performance and to develop specialized weapons for specific purposes. Thankfully for gun owners, this is still a lively tradition today.

One of the leading innovators in today’s world is the Kel-Tec company in Florida. Their weapons feature tactical stylings despite not being built to military specifications, and tend to have a reputation for bad quality among people who don’t own one. The actual owners admit the weapons take some getting used to, but will perform as well as any other gun with just a little practice and experience.

Kel-Tec’s base line of rifle is the SU-16, which fires a NATO 5.56mm round, or .223REM in civilian terms. The rifle is compatible with standard AR-15 magazines, but is not generally considered as accurate at ranges over 200 meters. The innovation comes in the form of choice of either a solid stock which holds extra magazines or an interesting folding stock for portability which allows the gun to be fired while closed. With a nine inch barrel option, the gun can be shortened to under 25 inches for easy transport and storage. The weapon is available with either a 360 degree Picatinny rail system for barrel accessories, or a front stock which unfolds to serve as a biped for stabilization.

The company also produces Bullpup rifles, which seem to be coming into their own for daily and military use, and the RFB series of Kel-Tec rifles are a great example of the technology. Available with either an 18 or 24 inch barrel, the RFB puts the receiver behind the trigger, incorporated into the buttstock. This allows for a shorter weapon for better maneuverability in urban environments without giving up accuracy and range needed for use outside the city. The RFB is fully ambidextrous with forward shell ejection and dual sided controls, making it well suited for the rigors of combat and tactical use.

One of Kel-Tec’s most noted innovations is that of a bullpup tactical shotgun with dual magazines to effectively double the amount of ammunition it can hold. The full tactical version has a 13.5 inch barrel and each magazine holds four 3-inch shells, for a total of nine shots with one in the chamber. The standard version holds six shells in each magazine tube, and an extended version holds 10 per tube. An especially appealing aspect of the dual magazines is the ability to shoot from either one, or alternatively between the two, allowing for different rounds to be loaded and used. Imagine the devastation produced in battle with 10 rounds of double aught buckshot in one magazine and 20 slugs in the other.

Although Kel-Tec doesn’t make weapons approved for military use, their design plans introduce features which are appealing to soldiers. As the designs are improved upon for efficiency and reliability, they are certain to be incorporated into future military designs, and are certainly worth taking the time to review and assess.
